Shibli, Shaduli and Ansar Nadwi have been in prison for the past 13 years. The three malayali men were part of the many arrested across the country in 2008, following the SIMI ban in the country. Shaduli was visiting his brother Shibili, an IT engineer in Indore, with his friend Ansar when the trio were arrested by the police. They were soon jailed on charges of conspiracy. Paradoxucally however, the Ahmedabad bomb blasts, for which they were later charged and given an indefinite trial and imprisonment, happened while they were in police custody.
A group of prisoners including the three Malayalees were deported to the ruthless and horrific Bhopal Jail in retaliation for their protest against severe prison torture and racial discrimination in the Sabarmati Jail in Gujarat.
The three men, who are currently awaiting trial in the Bhopal Jail, are being subjected to gross human rights violations by the jail authorities and the government for. They have been put in 24/7 solitary confinement, and are denied even basic facilities such as newspapers, books, stationery and Friday prayers. They are not even allowed to call or send letters to the family.
Following complaints, the National Human Rights Commission once intervened and found severe religious discrimination and human rights abuses to be happening in the jail. However, despite the commission’s recommendations, the prison authorities continue to violate human rights. The prisoners have staged protests, including a hunger strike, against the violence of the authorities.
This is a picture of what awaits the Muslim youth being hunted by the government and the NIA and imprisoned under the guise of trial. There are countless prisoners awaiting trail across the country, imprisoned for various vested interests.
We must rise in strong popular resistance for their freedom and fundamental rights.
